IP to company lookup for website traffic

An IP to company lookup answers one question: does this IP address belong to a business, and if so, which one. VisitorDetector runs that lookup continuously on every visit to your website, so instead of checking addresses one by one you get a running list of the companies reading your pages.

What an IP to company lookup actually does

Every device on the internet reaches your site through an IP address. Companies with office networks often use address ranges registered or associated with that business. A B2B IP-to-company data set maps those ranges to company records, with details such as name, website, industry and size.

VisitorDetector uses a licensed B2B IP-to-company data set. When a visit arrives, the address is checked against it. A match attaches the visit to a company profile. No match means the visit stays anonymous.

The data set is maintained by a specialist provider and refreshed over time, because companies move offices, change internet providers and open new locations. We apply it at the moment of the visit, so each profile reflects the most current mapping available when the company actually read your pages.

Business ranges versus residential ranges

Not every IP address says anything useful about a company, and pretending otherwise produces bad data.

Range typeTypical sourceWhat we do
Business rangesCorporate offices, company data centers, business internet linesMatched to a company when the data set knows the range
Residential rangesHome internet providersExcluded, stays anonymous
Mobile carrier rangesPhones on cellular dataExcluded, stays anonymous
Known VPN rangesConsumer and privacy VPN servicesExcluded, stays anonymous

A residential address points to a household, not a company, so we never try to turn it into a business match. That is also why we never identify a named person. Your report shows the matched share of your own traffic, which is the honest measure of coverage.

Why we match your traffic instead of offering a one-off lookup tool

A one-off lookup box lets you paste a single IP and see a company name. That has little value for a sales team. You would need to pull addresses out of server logs, check them one at a time and still have no idea what that company read or whether it came back.

VisitorDetector does the lookup for you, on every visit, automatically.

In short, a lookup gives you a name. Continuous matching gives you a pipeline. The full flow is on how it works.

  • Every visit from the same company joins one profile
  • Pages viewed, time on page and entry source are recorded with the match
  • Return visits and sessions build an interest score from 0 to 100
  • Hot companies trigger email and Slack alerts and sync to your CRM
  • You never handle raw IP addresses, and IP truncation is available

How accurate company matching is

Accuracy depends on how the visiting company connects to the internet. Large organizations with their own office networks match well. Small teams on shared business lines, remote workers and anyone on a VPN or phone are harder or impossible to match, and we exclude what cannot be matched reliably instead of guessing. We do not promise a match rate. The deeper mechanics are on how IP to company matching works.

What each matched company record includes

01

Company name and website

02

Industry and employee range

03

HQ country and region

04

LinkedIn company page link when available

05

Visit history with pages, time on page, sources, sessions, first and last seen

These records feed filters, segments and alerts. See website visitor identification software for every feature.

Company data, not personal data

VisitorDetector does not create personal profiles, does not collect emails and does not require third-party cookies. You get an opt-out page for visitors, IP truncation, a retention setting (13 months by default), notice templates for EU and California, and the option to respect Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. See privacy-first visitor identification. This is not legal advice.
